Cough can be grouped either by time or type as given below
1. Acute Cough: It lasts for less than three weeks and typically presents as a manifestation of other usual infections, for example, common cold, influenza, or general respiratory infections such as pneumonia.
2. Subacute Cough: This lasts for three to eight weeks. It is considered after an acute illness but it is also connected with post-infection cough or sinus infections.
3. Chronic Cough: The cough which persists for over eight weeks is chronic. The major diseases that cause chronic cough are asthma, COPD, acid reflux or a few drugs including ACE inhibitors.
