History and Heritage of Wood Carving Wood is one of the oldest materials to be used in art because it is so easy to shape and work with, besides its inherent nature. Most cultures have succeeded in filling their wooden carvings with a wonderful depth of spiritual and symbolic significance. Wood sculptures from ancient Egypt, African tribal masks, and Native American totem poles are among the many ways that wood has been used throughout time to showcase cultural identity.
During the Middle Ages, it was also used in sculptures and altarpieces, including even the chairs for a church. During the Renaissance, the wood is used in the fine arts most especially with the works of the artists like Albrecht Dürer whose work in woodcuts alone has been a revolution in its own.
