History of Timekeeping Devices, Especially Watches, Spans Thousands of Years. From simple sundials to the complex mechanical marvel, it all started and evolved during those thousands of years that passed by. Here is a recap:
Ancient Timekeeping
Sundials-1500 BCE: First invented in ancient civilizations based on the movement of the sun to reflect time.
Water Clocks-2000 BCE: Clepsydras measured time based on the flow of water.
Mechanical Era
Medieval Clocks (13th Century): With the invention of mechanical clocks in churches and towns, it brought a new epoch into being since it used gears and weights.
Escapement Mechanism (14th Century): This was built further for accurate time keeping and paved way for the time pieces to be portable
The Revival of the Watch
Pocket Watches (16th Century): A time piece, basically decorative and also an indicator of one's status.
Spring Wound Device 17th Century : The invention of mainspring enabled watches to become much smaller yet highly reliable.
