The Rich History of Makkah: Ancient Times to the Modern Day
Introduction
Makkah, also referred to as Mecca, is a city in western Saudi Arabia. It is held as one of the holy places for Islam. From ancient trade routes to being the spiritual center of the Muslim world today, the history of Makkah goes back thousands of years.

Ancient Origins
The city was originally settled by the Jurhum tribe.
Makkah's past history goes as far back as about 2000 BCE.

It became an important point on the way of incense that branched from Yemen and extended to the Mediterranean.
The Kaaba
It was a pilgrimage site for the various pagan cults.
It was later believed to have been built by Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his son Ismail according to the account of Islam.

Muhammad was born in Makkah during the years approximately 570 CE.

He received his first revelation in 610 CE in a cave near Makkah.
